Curriculum -- Kornmehl Pre-school

A child-centred, total learning experience in a nurturing, educational environment.

The Kornmehl Centre is a community-based Jewish Pre-school located in the campus of Emanuel School. The centre operates daily throughout the school term for children aged 3 to 5 years. Classes are divided into age groups – the youngest children in one class and those who will be attending school the following year in the second class. Our purpose is to educate and encourage the developing young child in the important formative years before school.

Our philosophy

A hundred ways of marvelling, dreaming, thinking, seeing.

The Kornmehl Centre is rich and dynamic. We have developed a culture of reflection, questioning and extension in our thinking about the importance of young children enjoying a long, happy and challenging early childhood.

Much of our thinking has been influenced by the research of educators from Reggio Emilia, in Italy, who believe it possible to join education, culture and quality. The great educationalist, Loris Malaguzzi, states that children have “a hundred languages". What this means is we as adults can see children in only one or two ways or we can see children in 100 different ways.

The child we see at our Pre-school has 100 languages, 100 hands, 100 thoughts, 100 ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking – 100 ways of listening, of marvelling, of loving, 100 worlds to discover, to invent, to dream. Their ideas may be expressive, communicative, symbolic, cognitive, ethical, metaphorical, logical or imaginative. It is our task to respect and represent the shape of the “100 languages” of each within the total learning Pre-school experience.

Child-centred and collaborative

Our curriculum is a process that is guided by the needs and interests of the children. Much of how we do this is determined through listening.

Collaborative learning ensures learning does not occur in isolation but involves relationships between children and families, children and teachers and children with each other. Emphasis is placed on the value of relationships with both adults and children. From this, children develop the ability to co-operate, to enjoy working as part of a group and to move towards an understanding of the needs of others.

An aesthetic, modern environment

Our Pre-school has been purpose-built with such features as a dropped kitchen and child-high windows. It is as familiar and welcoming as their own homes and offers abundant resources, such as iMac computers. The outdoor environment also offers special places inviting play, exploration, discovery and learning.

Our cultural heritage

All Jewish festivals are shared and celebrated. An integrated approach to fostering a strong Jewish identity is developed through song, drama story and teaching basic Hebrew.

School readiness

Assessment of school readiness includes visits to Emanuel classrooms, preparation for school classes, individual tuition in literacy and numeracy and individual assessment for skill level.

Class structure and size

Two classes, one for 3-4 year olds and another for 4-5 year olds.
Hours: 8.30am – 3.30pm, five days per week.
Two adults to every 20 children. Highly experienced early childhood specialist teachers

Safety and Security

The safety and security of all our children are of paramount importance at all times. The Pre-School is securely fenced on all sides and the main security gate is activated internally for authorized persons. Parents can rest easy that their children are in capable, caring and safe hands at all times.
