Schools develop citizens of tomorrow so they need to offer
much more than training in academic subjects. While some students
may be seen to exhibit leadership characteristics earlier
than others, leadership and all the skills, morals and ethics
associated with leadership need to be learned through careful
direction and experience. A school needs to work in partnership
with parents to identify and model these skills and values
in a meaningful context. Because a school is a microcosm of
society at large, school is the perfect place to nurture tomorrow’s
leaders.
Emanuel students have the chance to run for
selection as School Madrichim - Year 12 leaders who play a
crucial role at the centre of the School’s student “culture”.
They are “on stage” at public occasions and they
reflect the dual enterprise that is the running of the School
– an enterprise that belongs to staff and students alike.
The Principal and Deputy Principal prepare new
Madrichim for the important roles they will play by taking
them on a leadership camp. Here, they consider some of the
different scenarios they might meet and are encouraged to
set their goals as student leaders. The Principal and Deputy
Principal meet with the Madrichim weekly to consider issues
as they arise and to plan for the future.
