Classroom Music

Our state-of-the-art Music Technology Suite ensures that we remain at the forefront of providing a cutting-edge musical education.

Music is a compulsory subject for students in Years K-8 and an elective subject from Years 9-12. Elective students may select any instrument as their performance medium. All NSW Board of Studies Music courses are offered, including Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension at Higher School Certificate (HSC) level.

Classroom activities include performance, composition, listening and musicology, through which an appreciation for all types of music is developed. A keyboard and music technology lab, performance rooms and a computer-driven recording/editing/composition facility provide a well-resourced learning environment. At all levels of study, Music students are provided with the opportunity to develop skills as both musician and music scholar.

Primary School
Students study a variety of topics within the Music curriculum, with Years K-6 Music classes taught by a specialist Music teacher. Primary School Music lessons are highly practical, experiential lessons focused on developing musical literacy through interacting with a wide variety of music experiences. Cross-curricular links between the Music curriculum and the broader Years K-6 curriculum are maintained, with Global Studies topics covered in the Primary classroom reinforced in the Music classroom through exposure to related music repertoire.

The study of Jewish music and musicians is integrated into the Years K-6 Music program, which also includes musical preparation for celebrating the chaggim (Jewish holidays).

High School
In Years 7 and 8, topics covered reflect a breadth of music genres, including a focus on Australian music in all its diversity. Topics studied may include Program Music, Music of a Culture, Rock Music, Popular Music, Music for Radio, Film, TV and Multimedia, The Blues, World Music and the Guitar.

In Years 9 and 10, in addition to the compulsory topic of Australian Music, a wide range of subject material is covered, such as Classical Music, Art Music of the 20th and 21st Centuries, Music of a Culture, Music for Small and Large Ensembles, Popular Music, Jazz, Music for Radio, Film, TV and Multimedia, Theatre Music, Rock Music, and Music and Technology.

In Years 11 and 12, students can study either Music 1 or Music 2. Outstanding Music 2 candidates have the option of taking Music Extension at HSC level. Both Music 1 and Music 2 involve a selection from a wide range of topics, while Music 2 also includes the core topic, Music of the Last 25 Years (Australian Focus). All HSC Music students complete a core performance on their chosen instrument as a component of their assessment. In addition, students can elect to complete a selection of performances, compositions, musicology essays or viva voces.
