Music

A rich musical culture pervades Emanuel School. We endeavour to assist all students in their pursuit of developing and nurturing their musical talent.

Music at Emanuel School has grown exponentially over the last few years. A compulsory Instrumental Program (IP) begins in Year 3. All students learn a musical instrument until the end of Year 6, when it becomes optional.

Private instrumental and singing lessons are available for all students in Years K-12. Lessons are available for most instruments.

Students learning instruments have a huge range of performance opportunities, with a wide selection of extra-curricular instrumental ensembles offered, including three Concert Bands, two Stage Bands, two Klezmer Bands, three String Orchestras, and a breadth of Chamber Music ensembles. Vocalists can participate in one of our seven choirs, ranging from the Infants' Choir to the Senior Chamber Choir.

The Music program provides experiences for students individually, in class groups, extra-curricular groups, and as members of special project teams. The Music Department is led by a talented team of professionals, passionately committed to the development of musical talent, interest and enjoyment throughout the School.

Exceptionally talented students are invited to take part in eisteddfods and other competitions. Within the classroom, extension activities are designed to meet their needs. Music Scholarships are now offered to two outstanding musicians, one commencing Year 7 and the other Year 9.

Our state-of-the-art Music Technology Suite in the Emanuel Fisher Music Centre houses 12 iMac computers equipped with MIDI keyboards, with music software such as Sibelius 6, Logic Pro and GarageBand available for our Music classes. This step forward in the implementation of music technology at Emanuel continues to ensure that we remain at the forefront of providing a cutting-edge musical education.

Each year, the Music Department pursues at least one special project determined by student needs, interests and school resources. Previous projects have included recording a School CD, producing a musical, and concert band tours. Concerts are highlights of the school calendar - some large-scale and some intimate gatherings of the cognoscenti.
