Music at Emanuel School
A rich musical culture pervades Emanuel School. We endeavour to assist all students to develop their musical talent and love of music.
All students study Music from Pre-school through to Year 8. In Years 9-12, Music becomes an elective subject, and at HSC level we offer all Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (NESA) Music courses, including Music 1, Music 2, and Music Extension.
The Music Department is led by a talented team of professionals who are passionately committed to developing musical talent, interest, and enjoyment throughout the School. Our teachers are equally skilled in the classroom and as conductors, ensuring strong integration between curricular and extra-curricular programs so that students’ musical abilities are nurtured both inside and outside the classroom.
In addition to their weekly Music class, K–2 students can join the Infant Strings Program, learning violin, viola, or cello. In Years 3–6, all students participate in the Instrumental Program (IP), learning an orchestral instrument in small groups with professional tutors. From Kindergarten to Year 12, private instrumental and vocal lessons are available, delivered by visiting tutors during the school day.
Students enjoy a wide range of performance opportunities through diverse ensembles, including five choirs, four concert bands, four string ensembles, two stage bands, two jazz ensembles, two guitar ensembles, two Klezmer ensembles, and multiple rock bands.
Each year, around 185 students attend our Music Camp at CRU Lake Macquarie. Our concert bands proudly represent the school at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF) annually. Other highlights of our vibrant music calendar include Night of Winds and Percussion, Night of Strings, Night of Song, Night of Rock and Jazz, Live @ Lunch, and the annual K-12 Music Competition for performers and composers. Students receiving private tuition also have the opportunity to showcase their talents in our Twilight Concert Series held throughout the year.
Musical theatre is another vibrant part of our culture. Recent productions include Midnight, The Cinderella Musical and The Addams Family in the High School and Finding Nemo Jr in the Primary School.
Emanuel School Music Scholarships are available to students entering Year 7 or Year 9 who, in addition to performing well in academic scholarship testing, also demonstrate exceptional performance skills on at least one instrument or voice. Applications are welcome from both current Emanuel School students and external candidates. Please click here for more information.
